ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Judge Pratt is Chief Judge in Newark Municipal Court and author of The Power of Dignity: How Transforming Justice Can Heal Our Communities. She has spent years gaining a deep understanding of how justice could be delivered to court participants in a manner that increases their trust in the legal system and changes their behavior. As a nationally recognized expert in procedural justice and alternative sentencing, she has transformed her courtroom into a place for problem-solving and a resource for healing, in part by assigning essays and art-making to defendants as ways for the court, and the defendants themselves, to understand their hardships.
Judge Pratt has previously served as a Professor of Professional Practice at Rutgers Law School - Newark and the School of Criminal Justice. She is currently the Executive Director of Odyssey Impact, a nonprofit based in New York. She also continues to champion criminal justice reform through her consulting firm Pratt Lucien Consultants, LLC, by sharing her skills and approach with others. As well as speaking to leaders of institutions and organizations about how to heighten and restore respect into their day-to-day operations so that their mission can be better achieved.
